OCESD Support for Paradise Unified Staff and Students

The Oroville City Elementary School District Board of Trustees will hold a Special Meeting next week. The board will discuss how OCESD can support the Paradise Unified School District in finding a place to educate their students until Paradise can rebuild after the devastation of the Camp Fire.

Pending board approval,  OCESD will move the 94 students attending at Bird Street Elementary School to open classrooms at Stanford Avenue Elementary School. This allows the Bird Street students to stay with their same teacher on a new campus. OCESD staff will negotiate a lease for Paradise Unified School District to utilize the full Bird Street campus as a Paradise Campus during reconstruction in Paradise. Bird Street has seven classrooms, a common room, offices, and a cafeteria.

“It is important that the education community in Butte County work together to support the students and staff of the Paradise Unified School District. The Oroville City Elementary School District will continue to support our Paradise friends and family who have lost so much,” said Oroville City Elementary Superintendent Spencer Holtom.

“Paradise Unified is very grateful to our partners in education and looks forward to continuing to work with Oroville City Elementary. This opportunity allows us to fulfill the promise we made to our families to keep our students with their teachers” said Paradise Unified Superintendent Michelle John.

Paradise will provide transportation from surrounded areas as needed

The OCESD staff is committed to supporting Bird students and families to make these changes as smooth as possible.

Steps OCESD is taking:

Working with families to possibly put Bird students in grades K-5 together on one campus (Stanford Avenue or Wyandotte Academy)

Working with Oroville Union High School District to ensure Bus Transportation for Bird Street students moving to Stanford Avenue

Working with OCESD staff across the district to provide support during this time of transition.
