Dear Families,

My name is Spencer Holtom, and I serve as the Superintendent of Schools for the Oroville City Elementary School District. I am pleased to introduce a new educational initiative developed by the district: the Virtual Academy.

In response to the growing demand for flexible, home-based learning solutions, we've created a program that integrates the advantages of both public school resources and the autonomy of homeschooling. We know no single program is perfect for everyone, but our Virtual Academy aims to provide public school resources to homeschooling families. This empowers parents to retain significant oversight of curriculum, peer interactions, and the overall learning environment. Our objective is to furnish the foundational academic components—reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, and physical education—while allowing families to manage other aspects of their children's education independently.

Program Features

Here's what our new Virtual Academy offers:

  • Flexible Pacing: Our curriculum is designed to accommodate individualized learning paces, offering inherent flexibility for each student.

  • Structured Live Instruction: Students benefit from daily live instruction delivered by experienced and dedicated OCESD teachers. This includes one hour of daily instruction for Grades 2-3, and one hour of weekly instruction for Grades 4-8, supplemented by an additional one-hour personalized check-in for all students.

  • Expert Faculty: We've assembled a team of three highly experienced educators with a combined teaching tenure exceeding 80 years in the classroom:

    • One dedicated teacher for Grades 2 and 3.

    • One dedicated teacher for Grades 4 and 5.

    • One specialized teacher for Grades 6, 7, and 8.

  • Advanced Curriculum: For our students in Grades 2-8, we've adopted Edmentum, a robust and comprehensive digital curriculum that ensures access to a high-quality educational framework with an extensive course library, particularly for middle school levels.

  • Remote Accessibility: The Virtual Academy operates entirely online, eliminating the need for students to attend a physical school campus.

  • Collaborative Parental Partnership: The program fosters a unique collaboration between parents/guardians and our teaching staff, providing enhanced oversight and direct involvement in the curriculum delivered within the home environment.

We believe the Virtual Academy offers a compelling blend of academic structure and family-centered flexibility, providing essential educational support while respecting diverse homeschooling philosophies. We invite you to learn more about how this program can serve your children's educational needs. To learn more please email me at Super@ocesd.net and to register for the program please go to www.ocesd.net. If you live outside our school boundaries, not a problem. We accept students from all over the area, including adjacent counties.

Sincerely,

Spencer Holtom Superintendent of Schools Oroville City Elementary School District
