Qualifying for PIP and STSP

Subject Matter Requirements

  • Multiple Subject-40 units

  • Single Subject- 18 units

  • Special Education- meets requirements for either Multiple or Single Subject as above, or 9 units in special education or combination special ed/regular ed, or  3 years Special Education Experience

The applicant requirements for the PIP and STSP are exactly the same with one difference.  Any applicant who has passed their subject matter exams DOES NOT qualify for a PIP (If the holder has met subject matter competence, they should contact a California college or university or school district with a Commission-approved intern program regarding enrollment).  STSPs are valid for the current school year only and the PIP is valid for one calendar year.  Both are non-renewable.

PIPs require documented public posting at least 72 hours prior to the position being assigned and documentation of recruitment efforts for all of the following:

·       Copy of job posting
·       Copy of internet posting
·       Copy of documentation that recruitment was done at college placement centers

However, he/she will not be eligible for permanent status until she obtains a preliminary or clear credential and serves in a probationary position for two years. A person holding an Intern credential is treated a bit differently: a year as an intern will count toward permanent status if the employee obtains a regular credential and subsequently is reemployed in a probationary position. An employee’s seniority date is determined by the first date of paid, probationary employment. Ironically, this means that an employee who was first hired with less than a preliminary or clear credential and served for several years in that capacity may actually have more seniority than a fullycredentialed employee who became permanent after serving only two probationary years.
