OCESD going to Distance Learning for One Week After Holiday Break

Over the past two weeks, the COVID numbers in our county, community, and district have risen dramatically. We currently have 14 students that have been confirmed positive, with additional cases that we presume may be positive. We have seen these increases since our Thanksgiving break. Teri Woods RN, our district nurse, has been tirelessly working with students, families, and staff to manage all of the positive cases, quarantines, and exposure cases that are coming our way.  I am continually working with our board to develop plans as new issues come to our attention. Tuesday night at our board meeting it was very clear that our board wants our students in school, but they also value the safety of everyone. Our concerns center mainly around many of our families congregating during the holiday season. In an effort to mitigate the after-holiday COVID numbers it has been recommended by the board and district leadership that we go district-wide distance learning starting January 4th for the entire week upon returning. During that week, with the assistance of our board and local health officials, we will assess the local COVID cases and hopefully, we will be able to recommend that we return back to the in-person hybrid class as it is now, starting January 11.

I am a huge proponent of in-person instruction, but at this time I believe this plan is the best way to ensure safety for our entire district including all students, staff, and all the families involved.

  • January 4-8th: Distance learning district-wide. Distance learning could be extended if our COVID numbers continue to increase
  • No cost grab-and-go Breakfast and Lunch will be served at all of our school sites during distance learning starting Jan. 4th.  Serving times will be 11:00 to 12:30.
  • January 11th: Return to a regular schedule as it is now in the hybrid model, pending our Covid cases being stable.

Thank you for helping keep our staff, students and families safe. Happy Holidays!
